Stop-Start technology is proving to be popular in the green transport market.
The energy-saving system works by turning off a car's engine anytime the vehicle stops, such as at traffic lights.
According to its developers, the technology can reduce fuel consumption by up to 12 per cent and also lower carbon emissions.
Since being fitted in the BMW One series, micro-hybrid vehicles are reportedly becoming an increasingly popular green transport option among consumers.
Commenting on EU targets to reduce CO2 emissions, Johnson Controls European automotive product manager Tony Miller said: "More and more consumers are now being influenced EU initiatives for city access restrictions and fines on vehicles with high CO2 emissions."
Mr Miller added that micro-hybrid vehicles were likely to become a mainstream player in the green transport market.
It is thought that around 2.5 million micro hybrid models will be manufactured by 2010.
This number has been forecast to soar to ten million by 2015.
