Wind mast plans get go-ahead

Planning permission has been granted to build a large wind mast in Suffolk which will test whether the area has potential for a wind farm, it has been reported.

Sea & Land Power & Energy Ltd has been given the green light to erect the 60ft metrological tower by Mid Suffolk District Council, according to the East Anglian Daily Times.

It will stand on Mickfield Hall Farm for the next year and a half while data is collected about wind levels in the area.

If the figures prove positive, the company hopes to move forward with its plans to construct four 125m high wind turbines near Mendlesham.

This farm, it says, will be able to supply electricity to more than 5,500 homes for a quarter of a century.

Tim Passmore, leader of the local authority, said however that he has his doubts about how ideal the area is for a renewable energy farm.

"During summer months there is very little wind and I have yet to be convinced that wind farms are an economic source of energy," he told the newspaper.

"The principle is good, but these need to be out at sea or on the coast where they are far more use."
