Tidal project generates record electricity
Record breaking electricity generation from a tidal stream project has been achieved.
The SeaGen facility in Stranford Lough, Northern Ireland, reached its maximum capacity and has started generating enough electricity to power the equivalent of about 1,000 homes.
Developed by Marice Current Turbines (MCT), the 1.2 megawatts produced by the underwater rotary blades dwarfed the previous record for tidal stream technology of 300 kilowatts.
Martin Wright, managing MCT, said: "This is the highest power so far produced by a tidal stream system anywhere in the world and exceeds the previous highest output.
"Generating at full power is an important milestone for the company and in particular our in-house engineering team.
"We are very pleased with SeaGen's performance during commissioning. It demonstrates, for the first time, the commercial potential of tidal energy as a viable alternative source of renewable energy."
According to analyst Frost and Sullivan, the UK could meet 20 per cent of its energy needs from marine power.
