Students waiting for wind turbine permission

Students at a Nottingham school have secured the construction of a wind turbine to generate electricity and act as an educational resource.

West Bridgford School's student council stared a campaign for a wind turbine which is set to become reality next year when a 15-metre wind turbine is installed between two tennis courts.

If the project receives planning approval today (December 22nd), it is expected to generate 5,340 kilowatt hours, enough to save the school £300 on its annual energy bills.

The student council secured funding from ScottishPower, the government's Low Carbon Building's grant programme and also organised for the student body to fundraise by getting sponsorship to wear green to school.

Head teacher Rob McDonough told This is Nottingham: "This is entirely the student council it's something they wanted to do.

"I think as school leaders and governors we're quite taken aback by how we've been outmanoeuvred by the school council.

"I applaud them for their ingenuity here and their determination to see the project through. Green issues are very important to them."

As well as easing the school's energy bills, the wind turbine will contribute to government targets of generating 15 per cent of all electricity from renewable sources.
