Start building new atomic stations, says British Energy
British Energy is calling for work on new atomic stations to start immediately as the country is in need of "new capacity".
The company's chief executive Bill Coley said that it was important that words start turning into action on atomic stations.
"I think it's really important that the country gets on with this," the Guardian reports him as saying. "We have a very old generating fleet and the UK needs new capacity".
"We can't meet our climate-change obligations without nuclear. It's just got to be done."
He said that constructing new generation power stations would also help to provide thousands of jobs as it will need a "very sizeable construction workforce".
This week, the company revealed that its half-year earnings had fallen 49.7 per cent due to shutdowns at its nuclear power plants.
It reported pre-tax earnings of £257 million from April to September 2008, down from £511 million over the same period in 2007.
