Scottish schools to get green boost
Scotland's education secretary Fiona Hyslop has outlined plans to make schools in Scotland more green.
The politician said that measures would be taken to reduce the environmental impact education centres have through the use of renewables.
Promoting energy efficiency in schools will also be encouraged, following a report last year by watchdog Audit Scotland which suggested councils do more to ensure the designs of schools are sustainable.
Ms Hyslop said: "The green message to be conveyed through environmentally-friendly school buildings and facilities cannot be stressed enough."
She added that she had recently visited Sanderson's Wynd Primary school in Tranent where she witnessed "a low carbon school in action".
"With its combination of automatic lighting which reacts to the amount of daylight in a room, a windmill and solar panels on the roof to provide electricity, its design is leading the way in sustainable schools," she said.
New measures will include working with the Carbon Trust to secure sustainable school designs and funding two Schools Renewables Development Officers.
There are also plans to introduce a sustainable schools 'web-portal' to give advice and guidance on how to become more environmentally-friendly.
