New renewable sources classified

New forms of renewable energy have been recognised under recent EU agreements.

Air source and water source heat pumps, which use either atmospheric heat or underwater heat to warm spaces and water, have been classified as renewable energy under the EU directive of on the Promotion of Renewable Energy Sources.

Cedric Sloan, director general of the Federation of Environmental Trade Associations told Heating and Ventilating news: "It took a lot of explaining to Brussels, that air source and water source, not just ground source heat pumps, were renewable sources of energy. We're very pleased. Sometimes we thought we were the lone voice of common sense".

Like other renewable technologies, heat pumps reduce the amount of energy which users have to buy from the grid, and helps cut their domestic bills.

As a renewable energy their use will also contribute toward meeting UK commitments to generate 15 per cent of the nation's needs from renewables.
