Iceland keen to share renewable energy knowledge

27 November 2008

Iceland has plenty to teach the rest of the world about renewable energy, according to its president, it has been reported.

Olafur Ragnar Grimsson has said that after years of obtaining its energy from hydro and geothermal resources, the country has expertise that could help others, according to the Renewable Energy World website.

"We have much to offer in know-how and technological support," he said on the site's Inside Renewable Energy podcast.

"It is important for us to continue to establish relationships with countries that are serious about geothermal. As a leader, Iceland can help in many areas."

Figures show that Iceland now gets 99 per cent of its electricity and 78 per cent of its primary energy from hydro and geothermal resources.

Geothermal power is gleaned from energy generated by heat stored in the earth.

It is accessed by drilling through the earth in similar way to how oil is obtained but in this case water or steam wells are created.
