Scotland, Ireland, NI in wind energy grid talks

An energy grid to cater for Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland's wind energy needs may be in the pipeline, it has been reported.

Energy ministers have launched a study today (July 7th) into the potential benefits of creating a wind energy grid that will supply the power to all three countries, the Times reports.

An official speaking to the newspaper inferred that this would be done with a view to creating a continental grid.

"[The grid] will enable us to link into a Europe-wide supergrid for wind energy at a later date, which would make renewable energy a more reliable, flexible resource," the source said.

Commenting on the possible venture, Eamon Ryan, Ireland's energy minister, said: "Interconnection is the way forward."

Airtricity, which is to be involved in the scheme, recently announced that it is to further develop its windfarm projects in Portugal, which will provide the country with 250 megawatts of energy.
