North East looks to boost green energy sector
A project has been launched to generate more than £80 million of investment in the north-east's green energy sector.
Organisers of North East Energy 2015 (NEE 2015) will collaborate with private firms and public bodies to create large-scale demonstration activities to cut the region¿s carbon footprint and encourage energy efficiency.
Directed by the Wilton-based Centre for Process Innovation (CPI), the focus will be largely on chemical and process industry applications such as fuel cells, fuelling waste utilisation and innovative combinations of existing technologies.
It has received £432,000 of funding from regional development agency One NorthEast.
Graham Hillier, director of low carbon energy at CPI, said: "In the past five years, technological developments in low carbon energy have developed significantly, and together with the impacts of climate change legislation and worries over future energy security, the deployment of all low carbon technologies has become much more pressing.
"CPI and ONE believe that this region has all the skills, characteristics and sites to act as a major location for the demonstration and deployment of low carbon technologies."
Joanne Glendinning, process senior specialist advisor at One NorthEast, said: "With the launch of NEE 2015, we're confirming our commitment to low carbon energy technologies and ensuring this region is at the cutting-edge of its development."
