Russia and Ukraine hold talks over energy crisis

Russian and Ukrainian gas companies have held discussions in Moscow over the dispute which has left Europe on the brink of an energy crisis.

Officials from Russia's Gazprom met with their counterparts from Naftogaz early on Thursday, although there are currently no details on what was specifically mentioned.

Gazprom stopped all gas shipments to the Ukraine on January 1st, and then on Wednesday halted all deliveries through Ukraine's pipelines effectively cutting off many European countries reliant on the gas.

The meeting between head of Gazprom Alexei Miller and Oleh Dubyna from Naftogaz this morning was an unexpected development in the stand-off as both men had been due in Brussels for talks with EU officials.

Russia has accused Ukraine of stealing gas passing through the pipelines in its territory and cut off supplies in a dispute over unpaid bills.

The European Union (EU) depends on Russia for around a quarter of its gas, with 80 per cent or so pumped through Ukraine.
