Plans for energy efficient homes submitted

Energy efficient homes and workspaces for small business owners will be built to minimise energy and water use if the proposal is approved.

Plans for the redevelopment of a derelict cheese factory in Melton have been submitted to the council by Harby Estates.

The mixed use development hopes to overcome previous concerns from the council over business floor space and residential density.

Under the new plans, 36 energy efficient homes and six live-work units would be built.

According to the Melton Times, the planning application says: "All the proposed buildings will be designed in a way that limits energy and water use to an absolute minimum, making the homes and workplaces more affordable to run."

Energy efficiency is an easy way to reduce the cost of energy bills.

Residents of existing houses can make simple energy improvements as well as change their behaviour to cut their bills and their carbon emissions.

Installing insulation, which is currently subsidised by the government, radiator reflectors and double glazing will boost a home's energy efficiency.

Remembering to turn off all applications and turning down the thermostat by one degree will also lead to money savings.
