Poverty and climate change 'should be tackled together'
Poverty and climate change should be jointly tackled, according to a coalition of social justice and environmental campaign groups.
A report entitled Tackling Climate Change, Reducing Poverty, has been published by groups such as Oxfam, the new economics foundation and the Royal College of Nursing.
The groups have urged the government not to treat the problems in isolation or fall into the error of sacrificing tackling climate change in order to deal with poverty.
While the report does note that higher taxation on fossil fuels could affect poverty, it also highlights how focusing on fighting climate change could help improve the situation of the poor.
For example, it notes how insulation, which the Energy Saving Trust recommends for all homes, can help households cut their energy bills at the same time as reducing their carbon footprints.
The report claims this is one of the 'virtuous circles' that can result from tackling the two issues jointly.
Last year Gordon Brown announced free or half price insulation for all homes.
