Africa plans biggest hydro dam project

28 April 2008

The Democratic Republic of Congo could be the site for the world¿s biggest hydro-electric dam if financing for the £40 billion project can be secured, promoters said last week in London.

It is estimated that if the 670 feet high, nine-miles long engineering wonder gets off the ground, the Grand Inga project on the Congo River could generate twice as much power as the Three Gorges dam in China, providing power to electricity 500,000 Africans, and boosting the continent¿s electricity supply by a third.

Construction could start in 2014, promoters said, with operations coming online between 2020 and 2025.

Two hydroelectric plants are already built on the river.

The dam could provide 320 terawatts of electricity each year.

News of the plan was aired at the World Energy Council (WEC), which hosted a two-day meeting in London last week.

The WEC is calling for finance for a feasibility study to be undertaken as soon as possible.
