500m recycling scheme for London

London mayor Ken Livingstone has published a draft strategy to boost recycling by businesses in the capital.

The draft strategy - Making Waste Work in London - includes targets for businesses to reuse, recycle and compost at least 70 per cent of rubbish by 2020 and achieve recycling and reuse levels in construction, demolition and excavation waste of at least 95 per cent by 2020.

Mr Livingstone said: "The aim of this strategy is to ensure by 2020 business waste no longer undermines the capital's future as a clean, green city. We need to work with businesses to reduce the impact of business waste on our environment and cut climate change emissions.

"Wherever possible we need to use waste to generate clean, renewable energy, turning it into a resource rather than a problem to be dumped."

The draft strategy builds on initial talks with the London Assembly and the Greater London Authority and London businesses and the public have been invited to respond to the strategy.
