What is the Home Energy Saving Programme?

On the 11th September 2008, the Prime Minister announced measures to help people cope with their fuel bills.

The Home Energy Saving Programme, amongst other things, helps UK householders make their homes more energy efficient and therefore reduce their fuel bills.

The measures will be paid for by the energy companies - at a cost of £910 million.

The Home Energy Saving Programme will help people to save money and save energy in the long term. It's important that people can start saving money and fuel as soon as possible. We offer support to help everyone get their grant.

Why do I need insulation?

By installing cavity wall and loft insulation you could save around £270 a year on your energy bills. You'll need less energy to heat your home so you'll use less fuel and produce less CO ₂ .

Currently there are around 7.3 million UK homes with un-insulated cavity walls and 12.9 million with no or less than 150mm of loft insulation.

Why is the Government spending money on insulation instead of giving me money off my energy bills?

The Government has chosen to spend money on insulation grants because insulation saves you money in the long term. Once it's installed you'll need less energy to heat your home, which means lower fuel bills year on year.

What if I have insulation already?

Even if you have insulation already, you could still reduce your bills by making other saving energy changes. For more energy saving options, see What can I do today?
