Recruit Project Sponsors

Obtaining support at as high a level as possible within the organisation has been shown to be a critical success factor. Senior level sponsors can help to drive the process and to act as an internal champion. If possible, we recommended that you have both an elected member and senior manager as project sponsors.

Project Sponsors are responsible for supporting the Project Leader by:

  • Making sure the Project Leader has sufficient time and resources to fulfil their role
  • Canvassing support from senior colleagues including the Chief Executive
  • Acting as ambassadors for the project, generating enthusiasm
  • Coaching and guiding the Project Leader
  • Breaking down political barriers - managing the internal politics
  • Challenging assumptions - using experience to challenge the project and its direction constructively, considering alternative approaches to ensure that the direction and thinking are sound

The appropriate individuals to be Sponsors will depend on the existing interests, motivations and responsibilities of candidates. They must be in a position of significant authority. Typically, the following individuals have assumed Project Sponsor roles:

  • Directors of relevant key departments such as: policy and resources, planning, property services, development, environment, transport, education and social services.
  • Executive Cabinet Members with relevant portfolios such as environment, sustainability, resources and finance
  • Chief officers including the Chief Executive, or Deputy Chief Executive, the Finance Director or Treasurer.
