Case Study Domestic wood pellet boiler in Co. Fermanagh

Self catering cottage wood pellet boiler

Summary

The only self-catering cottage in Co. Fermanagh to have a wood pellet boiler, this example demonstrates how the modernisation of wood fuel provides an easily controlled and user friendly system while continuing to offer the warm and cheery atmosphere of a normal fireplace.

The installation of the 28kW boiler assists with raising awareness of renewable energy through the guests who stay at the cottage, and is also of great interest to the local community. The installation took place over two days and the pellets are bought in bulk and stored in a clean, dry, storage shed.

How does it work?

Biomass heating

There are two main ways of using biomass to heat your home: you can use a stove to heat an individual room, or a boiler that will connect to your central heating and hot water systems. You?ll need a regular supply of fuel: logs, wood chips or pellets. Pellets are a more compact form of energy so they require less storage space, and are suitable for automatic-feed systems.

Key points

  • Savings on fuel bills

The wood pellet boiler should save around 30% per year on fuel bills, compared to oil heating.

  • Costs

The wood pellet boiler cost approximately £6,000

These costs were significantly reduced by a 60% grant through Interreg IIIA.
