Moving in

Before moving

Some people even take their bulbs with them when moving house. Check your fixtures and fittings list before exchanging contracts. If you need to buy replacements it's the perfect time to consider energy saving light bulbs, just one can reduce your lighting costs by an average of around £45 over the lifetime of the bulb and as much as £70 for brighter bulbs. They also last around 10 times longer than ordinary light bulbs.

Moving in

Gas safety check

Get the boiler in your new property checked by a professional. It could be inefficient, or dangerous and in need of replacement. If you are replacing your boiler, high efficiency condensing boilers are usually the best option for saving energy and money.

Heating controls

By adding or replacing worn or old heating controls you could save around 17% on your heating costs.

Insulation

Make sure your loft insulation is up to standard before using the loft as storage. You can save up to fifteen percent on your heating bills with a 270mm thick insulating layer, you could even fit it yourself.

After moving

As you settle in, there may still be a lot you can do to save energy and money.

Double-glazing

If your new property doesn't already have double-glazing, it's worth thinking about installing it before you decorate.

Appliances

Cavity wall insulation

Un-insulated cavity walls lose around a third of the heat that a home produces. By insulating them you can stop this loss of heat and save around £160 a year.
