Description:

Phase 1 of the Government's Low Carbon Buildings Programme provides grants to householders for the installation of micro renewable energy technologies. Phase 1 works towards raising awareness of the benefits of integrating microgeneration technologies with energy efficiency measures to create low carbon buildings.

Eligible expenditure:

Grants will only be given to technologies that have been certified and installed by certified installers. The following types of technologies can be funded:

  • Solar photovoltaics.
  • Wind turbines.
  • Small hydro.
  • Solar thermal hot water.
  • Ground source heat pumps.
  • Air source heat pumps.
  • Bio-energy.

Lists of certified products and installers can be found on the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) website.

Time scale:

The Government announced on April 1st that the householder stream (Phase 1) will be extended to June 2010 or as long as funds are available, whichever is sooner.

Applications by community and public sector organisations can be made through Phase 2 of the programme.

Streams 2A and 2B, for organisations and businesses, are now closed for new registrations.


Grant limit:

Householders can apply for grants of up to £2,500 per property towards the cost of installing a certified product by a certified installer.
