The latest integrated digital televisions (IDTVs) receive digital TV without the need for a set top box. The digital switchover started in 2008 and will be complete by 2012 so now is a good time to think of switching to an Energy Saving Recommended IDTV.

How they work

IDTVs have the capacity to receive digital signals without the need for a set top box. This means they do the same as a TV plus a set top box but with one power supply rather than two. Unlike many set top boxes IDTV's can be switched off without losing their settings and so don't have to be left on standby.

The savings

An IDTV can save around £7 a year and 20 kilograms of CO ₂ each year compared to a similar TV and set top box and are amongst the most efficient in their class.

How the savings add up

UK households spend around £2.6 billion a year on electricity bills to run consumer electronic products. There are over 16 million terrestrial digital TV receivers TVs in the UK, and if these were upgraded to IDTVs, this would save £112 million in energy bills.
