Water Energy Calculator
The Calculator is the United Kingdom’s most comprehensive online tool available to quantify your customers' water and water-related energy use and savings, and carbon emissions. It is regularly upgraded with new water and energy tariffs, heating device performance coefficients, population demographics and water-saving research findings.
The Calculator is a simple and flexible customer engagement tool, designed to suit any UK water company and the main domestic water use inputs.
You can apply to use our online Water Energy Calculator tool, and its ongoing support, within your own brand, in either of two ways:
Water Energy Calculator – on your website
Water Energy Calculator – software tool
Water Energy Calculator – on your website
The tool and its ongoing support can be integrated as part of your own website services and within your own brand.
It helps your customers make the link between their water use and their household energy bills, plus it quantifies the personalised benefits that come from simple water efficiency measures.
What does the Calculator do?
The Water Energy Calculator will...
- sit and operate within a window on your own website
- be a ‘white-label’ tool
- ask your customer simple questions about their boiler type, household occupancy and whether they are on a water meter, then then ask what water-using devices they have in the house, and how they use them
- provide each user household-specific results on their indicative water use, water bill, plus their energy use, energy bill and carbon emissions resulting from their family’s water use
- provide tips on where water and money savings can be made, according to each user’s results: each tip will also show some indicative water and money savings
- allow your customer to adjust any their water device and behaviour inputs, and immediately re-calculate and provide their personalised water, energy and carbon savings that they could achieve from their water efficiency changes.
Updates
The Energy Saving Trust will send all the householder inputs and results to your organisation, as a data set from your customer base, each month.
We will ensure that Calculator variables are maintained up to date: relevant energy tariffs, water tariffs, energy and carbon conversion factors, and boiler efficiency coefficients.
Next steps
We can license the Water Energy Calculator to appear on your website, and provide you with the Calculator’s captured data on water and energy usage. To find out how you can become a Water Energy Calculator partner, contact Andrew Tucker:

Water Energy Calculator – software tool
The Water Energy Calculator is a new and innovative customer engagement tool which can be used in door-to-door programmes for water and energy efficiency. It has been developed into a ‘stand-alone’ software programme, adapted from the Energy Saving Trust’s online version.
The Water Energy Calculator is the most comprehensive online tool of its kind. As well as quantifying the resident’s water and water related energy use, it can also provide the associated carbon emissions and potential savings – demonstrating the personalised benefits that come from simple water efficiency measures. It will help your customers understand the link between water use and their household energy bills. It is designed to help improve consumer awareness of water efficiency and provide household-specific outputs detailing the multiple benefits of simple water efficiency measures.
It can benefit programmes on water or energy retrofitting, meter installation behaviour change, and area-based or whole-house schemes.
How it works
The Water Energy Calculator software is designed to operate on a laptop, while offline, which allows it to be use:
- as part of a door-to-door customer engagement programme
- within a call centre to assist customers.
The tool will allow the water company, service provider or customer to input household-specific details on building and occupancy, current water using devices and appliances, and current water use and behaviour. The Water Energy Calculator will then save and model these water use inputs from each household, and produce a ‘report card’ for the user, summarising their likely water, energy and carbon outputs, plus indicative water and energy costs specific to their current household water use practices. This report card can be emailed to the householder as a PDF document. The data can also be remotely sent directly to the water company/service provider’s database systems.
The Water Energy Calculator will allow the home assessor and resident to adjust their water device and behaviour inputs, according to general or programme specific tips and retrofit options. This enables the tool to be used during a retrofitting or behaviour change home visit. The Water Energy Calculator will then recalculate and provide immediate answers for their potential water, energy and carbon savings.
The Water Energy Calculator can also capture basic building and energy efficiency data specific to the household, so that additional grants and energy efficiency assistance can be provided at a later date. This is designed to add benefit to both the resident and service provider.
What you get
The Energy Saving Trust will:
