Energy efficiency remains cheapest way to reduce carbon emissions, homeowners told
Edward Davey, the new energy and climate change secretary, has stressed his commitment to cutting energy waste by encouraging consumers to make changes to their everyday approach to life.
Mr Davey, who recently replaced Chris Huhne, claimed that he is "hugely enthusiastic" about energy efficiency, stressing that it remains the cheapest way to reduce carbon emissions.
But if the government is to meet its long-term environmental targets, it is imperative that consumers are educated on the issue.
"Two out of three consumers think their home is wasting energy, but only one in three is going to do anything about it. That has to change," he remarked.
"We need to get out there and show people what energy efficiency can really do for them."
To meet the long-term targets, Mr Davey acknowledged that more must be done to address the fact that the UK currently has some of the most inefficient housing stock in the EU.
