Bournemouth wins national Footprint Award for insulation project
An award has been given to Bournemouth Council in recognition of a scheme to increase energy efficiency in the area's homes.
National Energy Action, the fuel poverty charity, has selected the council in partnership with Dorset Energy Advice Centre for the Footprint Award.
The award was received for the area's Landlords' Insulation Project, which provides insulation for privately rented housing and does so free of charge to those on housing benefit.
After running for six years, the scheme has seen over 7,400 individual bed-sit units receive insulation, cutting 190,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions with households estimated to have saved over £1 million a year on energy bills.
The judges praised the scheme for successfully tackling the "notoriously difficult" private rented sector.
"It is a project that has gained respect amongst landlords and tenants in the area and has led to the strengthening of partnerships between local councils and businesses," they commented.
Bournemouth Council will receive a £3,000 prize with the award, while eight regional winners get £2,000 each.
