UK 'must become more resilient to climate change'
The UK must increase its resilience to climate change and make 'robust' plans to deal with the threat of global warming.
This is the finding of a major study by the Climate Change Risk Assessment, which has highlighted the top 100 challenges facing the UK and the economy of climate change.
It found that without any action taken to reduce the risk, there could be significant health risks from hotter summers and major water shortages by the 2050s.
"Without an effective plan to prepare for the risks from climate change the country may sleepwalk into disaster," warned Lord John Krebs, chair of the Adaptation Sub-Committee of the Committee on Climate Change.
"This report represents an important first step in the process and demonstrates why the UK needs to take action to adapt now."
The government has announced a National Adaptation Programme to prepare the UK for the effects of climate change. It is seeking the views of the public on what needs to be done on a local level to tackle the issue.
